My Research Paper

My topic of research paper is programming languages. I have learnt some programming languages when I was in college such as Java, C language, C++, and Php. Computer technology develops quickly recently. More and more new technologies have appeared. I wonder why have .Net and Jave become popular now.

According to look at wikipedia website, there are many information about programming languages. I am interested to find the reason.

Spring Break

     The Spring Break is coming. Yeah!!!! This is one of my favorite holidays after I came here because I can have a rest and relax after the midterm. Although spring break is not very long, students can do interesting things which they want. Actually, compared with a long holiday, I like a short holiday better. The reason is easy: I am afraid I have a bad daily schedule if I had stayed at home for a long time. Moreover, I would miss my classmates and teachers if I had not seen them for several months.

      In this Spring Break, I have some activities. First of all, I want to drive a car and have a short travel with my mother and my husband. I want to introduce America for my mum and let her understand American culture deeply although she has been here before. Second, I want to go to San Diego with my mum and my husband. Although I have been there twice, I still want to go there in the spring break because the down town of San Diego looks similar with Dalian’s, my hometown, especially, the architectures. I miss my hometown so much, so I can find some good memories in San Diego.  By the way, there is a big outlet store in San Diego, we can go shopping.  At last, I will get together with my friends who study in the U.S. Although our activity is simple such as having a meal, talking other people's gossip, sharing our secrets, playing cards, going to KTV, and going shopping together, we have a lot of fun. I am lucky because of them.

     I believe everyone has a different plan in the Spring Break. I hope we can enjoy it.

Talking with Animals

This topic is interesting. Compared with animals, I like the plant better. The reasons are easy. When I was a child, my family did not have any animals at all, so I was unfamiliar to animals. Indeed, my family and my teacher told me that touching animals would infect diseases. Therefore, I have never touched any dogs and cats. Sometimes, I was even scared by vociferant dogs.

Since I came to the U.S., I was get along with my landlord’s dog, Beibei. She is a cute and smart dog because she can understand expression and mood of everyone, who live in our house. She also can find a happy right person to play with her. When I just came to our landlord’s house, I did not like her because I dislike her to lick me. There was another reason: she had bitten my new shoes broken which were expensive and I like best. At that time, I was angry, and I wanted to talk to her why she likes to bite my shoes. After two weeks, my anger was disappeared. Beibei and I were still good friends. I always walked out with her when I felt lonely. Now, she does not live with us because my landlord gave her to her friend who is in Tax. When I saw my broken shoes which were bitten by her, I would recall my friend, Beibei. I miss her so much. If she could speak, I want to call her and ask her whether she is good or not.

Advice

     I like to accept advices when people give me some good suggestions. I am not an obstinate person. In my opinion, if a person cares about me in order to give me an advice, I am glad to accept it whatever is praise or criticism. When I was a child, my parents always taught me what I should do or what I should not do.  They educated me to be an honest girl from then on.  When I went to school, my teachers were very kind and helpful for every student.  They gave us many suggestions when we suffered difficulties. From now on, I still can remember my mathematics teacher, Mr. Liu, helped me to improve my math and make me love math finally. When I was in college, I fell in love with my ex-boyfriend, my husband. We helped each other and made a decision together if one of us had a problem because we understand ideas of each other deeply and know how to advise in a right way. Therefore, we can accept easily. In our lives, we may suffer different kinds of problems. If we can listen to advice which people give, the problem may be easy to solve.

American Food

When I looked at the topic, American Food, I thought the feature was sweet, oily and unhealthy. American food is very simple, such as hotdog, hamburger, french fries, salad, sandwich, cookies and others. Most of them are fast food. Compared with American food, I miss Chinese food very much. Although it is easier and faster to cook American food, the American food will make us put on weights and affect our health. Some people may think they need to work, so they don’t have enough time to cook. These people’s idea is right, but the health is much more important than time. If people don’t have health and good dietary habits, they don’t have enough energy to finish other things. Chinese food is different from American food. There are eight main dishes in China because different areas have different dietary habits, cooking methods and food. All of the dishes have different characteristics. According to different people's tastes, they can choose different dishes.  In a word,  food are totally different between America and China.

Optimistic Quote

This quote, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”, can encourage people to become an optimist. I totally agree with the saying.

Facing to the difficulty, different kinds of people have different ways to treat it. A pessimist often looks at bad aspects and has lots of stress. As a result, he cannot complete the difficulty very well, and he is also unhappy. Why does the pessimist learn from an optimist? The optimist has the same situation, and he can face to the difficulty happily and finish it very well.

I want to be an optimist, although sometimes I have a little bit pessimism. Now, I am trying to change myself. For example, if I have an important exam, I will summarize the main point of the exam, and arrange my plan. I will do some positive things rather than worry about the result before the exam.

In a word, a pessimist could be changed if he wants or has a big pressure.

Birds of a Feather

“Birds of a feather flock together.” This old saying is classic. In my opinion, most of my friends have the similar aspect with mine.

Wenbin, one of my good friends in college, has the same astrological sign as me, so our characters are similar. Sometimes, we have the same ideas to solve problems. When I was unhappy, I was glad to talk to her because she could give me some good advice which I could accept easily. After we graduate, we worked together in the same project group of a company. We had lived together happily for 1 year, and we did not quarrel at all. Now, although we separate into two countries (Japan and U.S.), we still keep in touch every week. She will visit me in Sep, so I hope this day could come earlier.

Nana, another good friend, has different character from mine. I like her lively and energy because she always smile at everyone and finish every difficult job remarkably. On the country, I was shy and kept silent all the time. She is very pretty and fashion. When I met her at the first time in our company, I could not believe that a software engineer was like a fashion model. Because of our work, we knew each other deeply, and then we became good friends. She is older than me, so her experience is more than mine. She always taught me which I should do, and which I should not do. Not only is she my good friend, but she is also like my older sister.

I am a lucky girl because I always make good friends in different places. Therefore, I never feel lonely because my friends always stand with me.

Getting Around

Before I came to LA, my friend had already told me that what a terrible public transportation was. At that time, I could not believe that. In my opinion, the US is a developed country, off course, it must be has a develop public transportation. When I arrived at LA and lived in Fullerton,  I was shocked because of the bad public transportation. I cannot go anywhere without a car. That was like I do not have legs. It is sad. Thank goodness, my husband and I owned a car. Although our car is an old one, we can drive the car to everywhere which we want to go. I am luckier than my husband. He came here eailier than me, and he did not buy the car when he just arrived here. At that time, he also had no friends, so he spent 2 hours  from his house to Fullerton DMV by bike in the sunny summer. When he arrived at DMV, his clothes got wet because of his sweat. He used to go to 99 Ranch Market in Anaheim for 5 hours by bus. Therefore, I was confused sometimes why there is such a bad public transportation in LA?

In my hometown, I am pride of the public transpotation. At lease, I can go anywhere without driving a car. There are many public buses, light railways, taixes. I dont worry about wether I can go back home any time. That is very convenient.

On the other side, I should say "thank you" to LA because I learn how to drive. If I lived in China, I wont study to drive. At the beginning of learning to drive, I hate it because both my husband and I  usually quarrel with each other.Thus, I give other friends who cannot drive a suggestion: you must hire a coach to learn to drive. My husband taught me how to drive, that's why we quarrelled at that time. Don't learn from your close person. That is not a clever idea. Now, I love to drive because I dont need to request my husband to take me outside if I want to go shopping or other places which I want to go. I can say goodbye to him and drive the car directly.

My Favorite Song

One of my favorite songs is called Meteor Rain, which is sung by F4, a Taiwanese group. There are two reasons why I like this song.

The first reason is that when I was a freshman in college, there is a popular TV show named Meteor Garden. I like to watch this TV show so much that I totally watched three times. Not only are there handsome actors, but it has an interesting story. Meteor Rain is the theme song of Meteor Garden.

The second reason is that my husband and I knew deeply each other under meter rain which was happened in Dalian China, and we fell in love from then on. When I listened to the song every time, I would remember those nice memories between us. Although other people felt this song, Meteor Rain, was just so so, it has an impressive meaning. In addition, we used the song as background music in our wedding party.

Weather

When my native friends ask me what is the deepest impression of CA, I always tell them the weather because of the bright sunshine and fresh air. I can enjoy the sunshine and breathe freely every season.

I like the warm weather with breeze just like the winter in Southern CA. Not only don’t we need to wear thick clothes, but we are also able to see green plants, colorful flowers everywhere, and snow in the mountains. I cannot find other places which have so beautiful view like Southern CA. However, I dislike the summer in CA because I have allergy of the ultraviolet ray in summer. Moreover, the sunshine in CA is extremely strong in summer, so I always hide in my room.

The weather of my hometown, Dalian, is totally different from Southern CA. Comparing with CA; the weather of Dalian has four clear seasons. Every season is different: warm and breezy spring, hot and humid summer, chilly and sunny fall, and snowy and freezing winter. I often got a cold when the weather changed obviously.

In a word, my favorite weather is the warm winter in Southern CA.

My Fears

As you know, everyone has different kinds of fears. Some people can overcome their fears. I think they are lucky and brave. On the country, some people cannot face to their fears. For example, my mum scares snakes very much. When she sees a picture printed a snake, she will fall in a faint suddenly. Please trust me. I showed the picture to mum when I was a child.

For me, I am lucky because I did not inherit from my mum. That means I do not scare snakes at all. However, I scare mouse whatever they are alive or dead. I cannot see them and feel disgusting. I did not overcome this fear so far.

 I was also afraid to speak in public areas when I was in middle school such as speech in front of class. I felt too nervous to say anything. At the same time, my face became red, my body was shaking, and my voice was changed to another person’s. I wanted to face to my fear in order to overcome it, so I talked to my teacher and asked her to help me. My teacher gave me some advices, and then I summarized which advices fit for me.

1)       I was a monitor at that time, so I practiced to announce some activities in class. This was a good chance to speak. At the beginning, I usually wrote a note and read it. After 1 month, I was not nervous, so I could say directly what I wanted.

2)       Although I have had a great progress when I was a monitor, I was still nervous when I had a presentation. I would like to practice several times in front of mirror. After several times, I have already increased some self-confidence. 

For overcoming my fear, it is helpful for me to use two methods. So far, I have a little bit nervous when I have a speech, but I feel better than before. I will keep practicing and face my fear bravely.

New Year's Resolution

The New Year, 2011, has been here for almost one month. At the beginning of New Years, I always do two things as following.

The first one is that I find a website of constellation. I am interested in constellation, so I usually search prediction of my astrological sign at the beginning of the year. I want to know which aspects I should pay attention in the New Year.

The second one is that I think about my resolution of the New Year and write it on my notebook. Then, I will check it at the end of the New Year for understanding which parts I have already got, and which parts I have not.

This is my plans in this year:

1)       Both my husband and I can keep healthy this year, so we will do more exercises on weekends. We are in the strange country. If we are sick, nobody will take care of us. Moreover, keeping healthy, I will have enough energy to finish other plans.

2)       I have to study hard, improve my English as soon as possible in order to pass the TOEFL and go to the CSUF.

3)       I want to enhance my cooking. My husband always laughs at me and says I have no talent to cook. For this reason, I want to beat him.

4)       My mum and my mum in law will come here and visit us this year. I will arrange a good travel plan for them and let them spend happy time in the U.S.

I hope all of us can reach our goals in 2011. By the way, the Spring Festival is coming-----Happy New Year.

Introduction

Hey everyone, here is Penghui Xu. My American friend said my name sounds like "Penguin"... so I'd like you to call me Sophia. Actually, my Chinese name has the similar meaning with my English name. I am glad to know you guys and become classmates each other. My major is computer science. Although I am not good at computer, it is more popular and easier to find a better job. That is one of reasons why I choose my major. I like to go shopping, listen to the music, travelling and make friends. I am also interested in culture of other countries. I hope that we will have a lot of fun in our class and improve our English as quickly as we can.
